Nokia N95 8GB Update Allows Full YouTube Access

If you were among those who ponied up the $779 to score a N95 8GB smartphone, you may be pleased to know that the most recent update appears to have improved the S60 browser to integrate Adobe Flash Lite 3. That means users can now enjoy in-line viewing of FLV videos and therefore full access to the YouTube library as it was meant to be seen. Unfortunately, the N95s multimedia keys can not control playback and the device is still friggin' expensive'€"but hey, it is something. [Boy Genius]

Rumor Smashed: Sprint Still Selling LG Rumors, Just Can't Keep Them in Stock

There was an rumor over the weekend about Sprint stopping sales of the LG Rumor due to a firmware erasure problem, so we got in contact with Sprint and got some information to set the record straight. No, Sprint hasn't stopped sales of the Rumor'€"the reason why you can't find it in stores is because it has "exceeded [their] expectations," and they're facing inventory problems. There is a small technical error that "impacts a very low percentage of potential customers," but they assured us that it's been addressed and has "in no way impacted our inventory issue."

TryPhone Lets You Sample Cellphone UI Without Buying

Curious about how that new phone works? Check out tryphone.com, the site that takes screenshots of just about possible screen and ties it to button presses on the virtual keyboard. In the case of the iPhone, you get to feel what it's like to press all the buttons, but you won't be able to do stuff like multi-touch or sliding gestures. It's a pretty great idea that'll let your parents know what it is they're getting into before you have to go and spend your Xmas teaching them how to use that new BlackBerry Pearl.
Samsung Katalyst Slider Hits T-Mobile Hotspot@Home

T-Mobile just introduced another phone for its Hotspot@Home Wi-Fi calling service, the Samsung Katalyst. The slider phone basics include a 1.3 megapixel camera, MP3 player, microSD slot (cards up to 2GB only) and stereo Bluetooth. Also called the t739, the phone will sell for $80 after rebate and contract renewal, and will be Samsung's second to run on the @Home service. Jump to see a better shot of the Katalyst, featuring a lady who's way too happy being stuck under glass like one of Krypton's most heinous criminals.
Ice Brkr Takes All Human Interaction Out of Going to Bars [Fear Of

Yes, I know, going up to a girl in a bar and introducing yourself is hard. What if she shuts you down?! Your fragile ego will be shattered! But really, it's not so bad. And I'm pretty sure the alternative that Ice Brkr is proposing is much worse. The new service, which is clearly destined to fail, would allow you to send a text message to any fine-looking lady you're too much of a pussbag to talk to and hope she deigns you worthy to talk to her. Beyond this being a lousy idea because it would require everyone to have this program on their phones, which will obviously never happen, it envisions a future in which personal contact is even further taken out of our lives. Here's an idea, guys: grow a pair. It's cheaper. [Product Page via Textually]

T-Mobile Rolls Out Second 3G Phone, Nokia 6263, Still No 3G Network

While everyone else is readying their 4G network, good ole T-Mobile is still prepping its 3G network, which is expected in early 2008. Though it feels like it's coming at a snail's pace, the carrier has made its second baby step with release of the Nokia 6263. Like the Samsung t639 before it, the 6263 will support the 1700MHz UMTS network. The clamshell also has plenty of music features, like dedicated controls, micro SD memory expansion, stereo Bluetooth and an FM radio. According to T-Mobile, the Nokia 6263 will be up on their site and in stores today, but weirdly no word on price. [Electronista]

Qualcomm To Build Universal Super Chip for GSM 3G, EV-DO and 700MHz Roaming [Cellphones]

Everybody is getting into the cellphone industry's new spirit of openness. Google pushes for open networks for the 700MHz wireless network to be, Verizon answers the call with a pledge to make its network available to all technology, and now Verizon's longtime companion, Qualcomm, has unveiled a chip that will be the heart of one hell of a universal, Android-friendly super phone. The RTR6570 will support the following technologies: '€ Upcoming 700MHz wireless networks '€ CDMA network from Sprint or Verizon (1900MHz EV-DO) '€ HSPA or UMTS data network from AT&T or T-Mobile (850MHz, 1700MHz and 2100MHz) Now that you're all excited, the bad news is that chip samples won't be ready until the middle of next year, and phones themselves won't hit the market potentially until 2009. But these will certainly be worth the wait: the ability to roam on all three networks means that you will never have to worry about coverage again'€"though God only knows what the roaming charges will do to your phone bill. Rocking slightly more detailed drawings than your usual patent-application sketch, the pics show a slider phone with retractable flash.
Motorola Zine, Totally Trademarked [Paper Trail]

We've already covered a juicy rumor about Motorola developing Motorola Z10 successors known as "Zine." Hmm...maybe that's Zines when pluralized. Anyway, Motorola has filed a trademark for "Zine" in relationship to the following huge blockquote of smartphone technology categories: Mobile telephones, pagers, radio transceivers, electronic personal organizers, headsets, microphones, speakers, carrying cases and phone holsters, computer software and programs used for transmission or reproducing or receiving of sound, light, images, text, video or data over a telecommunications network or system between terminals and for enhancing, interacting and facilitating use and access to computer and communication networks; computer e commerce software to allow user to safely place orders and make payments in the field of electronic business transactions via a global computer network or telecommunications network; computer game software for mobile handsets; computer software and programs for management and operation of wireless telecommunications devices; computer software for sending and receiving short messages and electronic mail and for filtering non-text information from the data; digital cameras, video cameras; data cards, modems, global positioning units, batteries, battery chargers, power adapters, antennas...[and] Wireless telephone services and electronic transmission of data and documents via communications networks and global computer networks. Looks like our intel was pretty good and Motorola has eliminated their anti-vowel bias once and for all. [trademark via trademork

Bluetooth Wristband: Better Than the BlueQ? [Bluetooth]

This is not the first time we have come across a wristband that alerts you to incoming calls. Some of you may recall the BlueQ from earlier this year. It worked--but not all that well. Could this device, dubbed the LM957, be a better alternative? According to the product site, the LM957 will not only discreetly alert you to an incoming call, it will also let you know when you have wandered more than 15 feet away from your phone. We are not sure how it compares to the BlueQ in terms of functionality, but it sure as hell looks better. Even if it does work, I wouldn't be all that interested unless there was a watch involved. Available for 23.50 or $48. [Product Page]

However, the folks at WirelessGround may have changed all that with their new USB enabled Leather Hand Strap.
Sony Ericsson Upgrading PlayNow to Real Live Music Store With 5 Million Tracks From the Big Four [Me

In addition to the trio of new handsets they intro'd today, Sony Ericsson also announced plans for an upgraded PlayNow music service. Launching this spring, it could feature up to 5 million tracks in "MP3 and Windows Media digital rights management, or DRM-enabled formats" from all of the Big Four, though no track price has been relayed. On the upside (or downside, if you spend compulsively), you can have your tab tacked onto your cellphone bill. Interestingly, SE's planning to cut service providers in on revenues from OTA downloads. Sounds like it's off to a better start than Nokia's competing venture at any rate. [WSJ]

gPhone OS Codenamed Android, Is Full OS With SDK? [More GPhone Details

Cnet is reporting that as part of Monday's big press conference, Google will unveil their iPhone killer gPhone OS, tentatively codenamed Android. Sources are calling the OS a "a complete mobile-phone software stack" that will be followed shortly after by a SDK (Translation: this isn't just an ad system and will have more than a bunch of lame web apps). As we mentioned before, CNET affirms that the OS should be open-source and Linux based, but we shouldn't expect to see it in stores soon. The number of companies involved (over 30) will make it difficult to move quickly on this. I'm just glad that this thing is moving out from the shadowy depths of rumorville.
