All Systems Go: 700MHz Auction Rules and Bidders Stamped in Stone [700mhz Auction]

I know I'm a geek because I'm almost as giddy for this as I am for MacWorld: The rules and bidders (214 of 'em) for 700Mhz spectrum auction, which starts on Jan. 24, have been finalized. No surprises here'€"the heavies like AT&T, Verizon and Google have their shit in order and the C block fireworks look good to go. [Ars]

Hate Your Cellphone? Deep Fry It [Fried Gadgets]

Boing Boing sent Xeni Jardin to set up a cellphone fryer at Machine Project's Fry-B-Que social in LA. The results are downright strange as they wrap Treos in bacon, bubble gum and cookie dough, dip the phones in batter and cook 'em up. The gross part is that Xeni took a bite of the finished product.
Freedom Phone Looks Simple, Small, Elegant

Designed for those annoying bastards who always say "I want a phone that just calls," the Freedom Phone does indeed bring freedom'€"freedom for the rest of us who are tired of you saying that every time you see a phone with fancy features. It's a pay-as-you-go phone that you buy with minutes already on board. The front only houses a dialpad and volume controls, and the back holds information such as the phone's number and other necessary information. Would we buy one of these if we were traveling in another country? Only if our phones didn't work there. [Yanko Design]

New Leaked iPhone Firmware 1.1.3 Shows Faux GPS and Other Cool Stuff

Gearlive is showing off some convincing screenshots of the new iPhone firmware 1.1.3. Arn over at Macrumors thinks they seem like functions Apple would do, even if the features don't line up with previous rumors: * The ability to send an SMS message to multiple people is now there * Google Maps application can now pinpoint your location using cell tower triangulation * Google Maps can now display the Hybrid map view * You can now drag and drop application icons on your home screen * The home screen supports pagination * You can now add web bookmarks to your home screen The proof is in the screenshots, which there are a few of below, but many more at Gearlive for you to investigate. Do they look real to you? They look real to me. If so, glad Apple is moving things along, but you know, half of this functionality was done by the hackers already. [Gearlive via MacRumors]

Do you wear a wristwatch, or do you tell time using your cellphone? We're about half and half here, most of the time wearing a watch but occasionally peeping at the time when we pull out our iPhones for Warbook on the go. You?
This Is What a Nokia E90 Blasted With a Shotgun Looks Like [Dead

Someone blasted their Nokia E90 with a 12-bore shotgun. And then decided to put the bent and twisted piece of telephony up for sale on eBay "for parts." Or for laughs, because then someone decided to buy the remains of the smartphone for $20.50. Apparently, he didn't realize that not a single part of this phone would work, as the E90 is mostly a single sandwich of printed circuit boards. Gunshot gallery is below. The eBay blurb describes it as Bluetooth Enabled, Calendar, e-mail, GPS Navigation, Internet Browser, MP3 Player, PDA-PC Sync, SMS-Text Messaging, Speakerphone, Unlocked, Video, Smartphone. And then he goes and tells us it doesn't even turn on. Tsk. Who knows, maybe the buyer just needs to replace the letter "E" for "End of Life" or "T" for "Trash."
How To Install an Internal 3G Card in the Asus Eee PC [Add 3G Card To Asus Eee

Hardware hacking genius and electromagician JKK has published a video tutorial showing how to add an internal 3G HSDPA card to the Asus Eee PC, allowing you to connect at high speeds to the Internet from anywhere in the world with 3G cellphone coverage. We talked with JKK and according to him "it works great" and "the hack is doable by any amateur with a solder iron." Indeed, it looks easy enough for our sausage fingers in the video: (UPDATE: This hack works in all currently shipping models of the Asus Eee PC) JKK told us that the "signal is super," saying that it is amazing how good it works: "it was big suprise to discover that those antennas are so good." He added that the total cost of the hack is $291 (200 euros,) not including your own time doing the soldering. Not bad at all for the features you gain. JKK is the same genius who hacked his Asus Eee PC with a touchscreen. His mini-wonder is now $850, which includes the 3G modem and his touch panel display. Be sure to check if your Asus Eee PC has an internal PCIe connector, however. According to site Eeeuser, there's a batch of the 4GB models (named 7B) which doesn't have this connector inside. UPDATE: JKK says that this hack works in every currently shipping Asus Eee PC model. No PCIe connector required. Awesome indeed. In fact, he told Gizmodo that it works in all models except the old 7A: "It works in all but the first ones... on those models (7A) you would have to desolder the PCIe connector away to make enough room for the 3G module. Either that or you have to cut 20 millimeters from the modded PCB [printed circuit board.]" [jkkmobile]

Sony Ericsson Z660i Leaked Image, May Not be Genuine

The folks at Unwired View have received a leaked shot of a new Sony Ericsson clamshell phone, which totes the Z660i moniker. Besides 3G connectivity, 2MP camera and a thickness of 14mm, not an awful lot is known about the metal clad cellphone. In fact, we cannot be certain the phone even exists. The Z660i first appeared on an Estato forum in the form of a rough sketch, the new leaked shot corroborates with the drawing previously seen. Given the two separate sources are similar, it's looking like this could be the real deal, but we cannot be certain. Either way, we wouldn't expect Santa to be dropping any of these down your chimney; not even he commands power over Sony Ericsson's launch team. It's not right, but that's how these conglomerates role. No respect for Santa'€"it's plain shocking. [Unwired View]

Korean scientists have developed a liver enzyme checker that analyzes a blood sample then connects to the base of a cell phone. Once connected, it relays the test results to a server at a hospital or doctor's office. There's no word on when this technology will be released to the public, but the Korean Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology has apparently filed a patent on it, so it must be close. That's good news for anyone on a first name basis with Sir Osis of Liver, if you know what I mean. [RegHardware via Ubergizmo]

iPhone 1.1.3 Update Coming by Saturday with Disk Mode, Voice Recording?

CNET France is pointing to "various rumors" that the iPhone will be getting a 1.1.3 update by the end of this week. And the two updates will both be welcome: voice recording, which is pretty self explanatory, and disk mode storage capabilities. Similarly to an iPod, the iPhone will prohibit the drag and drop sharing of iTunes media, but it will support your other data transfers a la flash drive. It sounds like a solid update, even if there's nothing Earth-shattering in the mix. (Oh, and of course those who've hacked their iPhones can expect the standard repercussions...blah blah...yada yada yada.) [cnet via electronista]

Motorola RIZR Z6c Has Dual-Band GSM and CDMA

If we're reading this correctly, the Motorola RIZR Z6c has both GSM and CDMA, meaning you can take this phone from CDMA networks in the States (Sprint/Verizon) onto GSM networks all over the world (or onto AT&T/T-Mobile). The phone's just hit the FCC so we're not sure what Motorola's plans for this are in terms of carrier distribution other than Verizon, but we do know it has EV-DO rev. 0, so that may be a hint as to which providers this is heading to (maybe Sprint?). World phones are becoming more and more popular'€"see BlackBerry 8830'€"so it means Moto wants to get in on this James Bond globe-trekking market as well. [Phonearena]

Motorola Drops to Third Place Behind Samsung, Nokia - Nobody Wonders Why

In news that surprises no one, Motorola's dropped to third place in global cellphone sales behind Samsung and Nokia, thanks to inventory issues and "an unremarkable product lineup". That's code for too many RAZRs and RIZRs, in case your decoder ring's in the shop. In comparison, Moto's down from 21% to 13% of the market in just one year, compared with Samsung's 15% and Nokia's 38%. Beyond that, there's Sony Ericsson, LG, and everyone else. Unless Motorola comes out with a phone that's a big a hit as the original RAZR was, we don't see any kind of upturn in the next year, either. [PC World]

Nokia N96 Rendering Looks Fake, But Interesting

GSMhelpdesk.nl has some renders of what could possible be (but probably isn't) the Nokia N96. These renders show a 3.2-inch, 16 million color touchscreen display, a dual-sliding QWERTY keyboard, and a one-way sliding dialpad keyboard. There's also a 6-megapixel camera on board, with 3G, Wi-Fi, GPS and Bluetooth 2.0. What's really cool about this rendering is the dual-sliding keyboard'€"the major thing that's missing from the current Nokia N95 models. (Notice it works upside down? Guess there's theoretically an accelerometer in there for direction sensing.)
