Toshiba G450 USB HSDPA Modem Doubles as Cellphone [3G]

Toshiba's new G450 USB HSDPA is designed to primarily function as a USB HSDPA modem for data on-the-go, but in a surprise combo double-attack move it also doubles as a handy cellphone. With its unconventional keypad and 96 x 36 pixel OLED display you're unlikely to want to use it as your main phone, but you never know, it may come in handy. It does give you tri-band EDGE/GSM, 2100 MHz HSDPA and 300 hours standby time, with 3 hours talk time and three colors for around $290 in Europe. [Unwiredview]

BlackBerry 9000 Spy Shot: Is it the Real Deal?

Someone on the BlackBerry forums with the handle "Cooper" who claims to hail from Waterloo, Ontario (RIMs Canadian HQ) has posted what appears to be a photo of the upcoming Blackberry 9000 series. If this photo is the real deal, you can plainly see that the much-rumored touchscreen functionality would not be part of the equation. Before you get all disappointed, keep in mind that this could be anything from a mock-up to a really awesome fake. [BlackBerry Forums and Boy Genius via Pocket-Lint]

More Windows Mobile 6.1 Details [Windows Mobile

BGR has an update to the Windows Mobile 6.1 details we showed you earlier in the week, showing off some more improvements that make us excited for WinMo again. Besides the Vista-esque home screen that you saw last time, there's a new font, zooming, and copy/paste in IE, process list and CPU usage in the task manager, a Wi-Fi indicator, and auto-configuring ActiveSync for your emails. They may not sound like much by themselves, but if you put them all together you'll see that Windows Mobile is heading in the right direction'€"into our pants. [Boy Genius Report]

HTC Touch Clone Has GPS, But Still Runs Windows Mobile [Cellphones]

If we were a Chinese company that made knockoff phones, we probably wouldn't make a knockoff of the HTC Touch. Not that the phone is bad'€"it's somewhat usable'€"but putting Windows Mobile 5 on any phone when WM6 is the standard now is kind of a bad idea. However, we would follow in their footsteps and beef up hardware features to include a GPS, a 2-megapixel camera and fingerprint security. We just wouldn't put Windows Mobile 5 on it.
N95 Accelerometer Used to Control R/C Car; Begs to be Ported to the iPhone [Cellphones]

Some enterprising modders have written a Python application that links up a remote control car with their Nokia N95 via Bluetooth, using the accelerometer to turn the phone into a little steering wheel. It's awesome. The next logical step would be to put a camera on the car that streams to the phone so you could see where it was going when it was out of your field of vision. N95/iPhone modders, the gauntlet has been thrown down. Let's make this happen. [Project Page via New Launches]

Santa AT&T Gives Away Free Holiday Ringtones [Do You Hear What I

AT&T is getting into the Christmas spirit and is serving up free Holiday ringtones, answer tones and a game called Santa Tower Bloxx to its customers. The ringtones include festive classics such as "Jingle Bells," "The Dreidel Song" and "Noche de Paz." The holiday answer tones featured in the promotion include "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree," "Feliz Navidad" and "Wizards in Winter." You can text the word "GIFT" to 7230 and a reply message will be sent with the link to download the ringtone. The carrier does show its Scrooge side as texting and downloading fees will still apply. There's no word on how long this offer will last, but my guess is it won't be around past Dec. 25 whether you're naughty or nice. [I4U News]

iPhone Malware Demo Freaking Me Out, Man

Maybe it's the eyes. Don't be too alarmed, but this video shows the iPhone being accessed by terminal using a program installed by a webpage. Since the program, like all unofficial apps, runs as root, they've got access to data stores for mail, call lists, contacts, and voicemail, which are served up via terminal. And no, that guy isn't hacking your ghost with those piercing eyes. I think. This is why a managed SDK with sandboxed apps like the one Jobs proposes for February is going to be a lot better than opening up the device outright, like it or not. Since this is a hack done via a website, it's likely the 1.1.1 TIFF exploit that can be patched by a) installing Apple's 1.1.2 patch or hacking your 1.1.1 iPhone using the Jailbreakme.com installer website. The guy runs all this on a LAN, knowing IPs, but it wouldn't be hard to have malware ping home, either. Nothing to scoff at, but also not surprising given the unofficial nature of the apps developed so far, and maybe nothing to freak out over. [FC via CrunchHickey]

Zipit

The benefits of instant messaging capabilities on a cell phone are undeniable: wherever you go, all of your IM buddies are just a keystroke away. Can'€TMt hold an extended conversation because you'€TMre working? IM. Have a quick question that'€TMs not worth a phone call? IM. Too loud in the bar to hear anything? IM.But for all the convenience it offers, the technology also carries a hefty price tag. Adding instant messaging to an existing service plan will add anywhere from $10 to $20 to a monthly bill with popular carriers such as Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile. Multiply that by many months, or in the case of families, many phones, and it really starts to add up.What'€TMs a cash-strapped teenager to do

Samsung a737 Live Video Slider Available

The Samsung SGH-a737 slider has been announced for availability on AT&T. The little lightweight only packs a 1.3MP camera, but its live video sharing through HSDPA support does a little to make up for the low res images. Of course, the phone also supports Bluetooth, streaming music through AT&T and partners, and storage up to 4GB through MicroSD. Wow, that's the size of the discontinued iPhone! It'll run you $50 with contract and rebate. And it's well worth the price if you live in a rural area to which slider technology hasn't yet permeated. But chances are, you don't. [at&t]

UBS Analyst Starts Countdown for iPhone 2, Reckons Spring

UBS analyst Ben Reitzes reckons there will be a new version of the jesusPhone before Spring has sprung next year. "Our contacts in the supply chain," he claims, "point toward a new iPhone model to be release by March." A report from UBS Investment Research has raised Apple stock to an estimated $220, and author Reitzes says that it will keep rising by the time MacWorld comes around next year. And it wasn't just iPhone '€" all sorts of predictions have materialized from the analyst's crystal ball: 1. There will be a surge in iPod sales now that the new iPods are fully available. Disappointing sales (10.2 million units!) were down to the new models coming so late in the third quarter, but more will be shifted in the run-up to Christmas. 2. Mucho money will be flowing into the Cupertino coffers from the European carriers as the iPhone hits the old continent. And that's before you've even taken into consideration the other territories where the cell has still to materialize. 3. Next year's money spinners are expected to be an ultra-portable device, gaming initiatives and the iTunes video rental scheme. And we don't even have to mention today's Leopard launch, and the summertime iMac update, do we? Reitzes' overwhelming feeling is that Apple's continued success is down to one thing: "It's the iPhone, stupid" and he believes that the company will continue with the strategy that brought them so much success earlier this year. "We continue to believe Apple is in the process of creating another version of the 'multiplier effect,' which we call 'Halo 2,'" he says. "Apple's fiscal 4Q results show that the build up to the launch of the iPhone and its ongoing excitement is driving sales of accessories, boosting retail traffic, and helping drive sales of iPods and especially Macs. As a result, we believe shares can continue to move higher into Macworld [Expo] in January." [AppleInsider]

The State of Free Cellphone Games:

Slate's running a pretty solid piece bemoaning the state of mobile gaming, in particular, the genocide of free games like Tetris and Snake as developers realized "consumers aren't going to buy the cow when they can play Virtual Milkmaid for free. It's obvious where this line of reasoning leads: Goodbye Tetris, hello $7 Tetris." The other great point the piece makes is that more complicated games'€"often miniature versions of full-size console or PC games'€"are a waste, since most mobile gamers just want to slay a few minutes in line at Starbucks, otherwise they'd have a DS or PSP. That, and yeah, paying money for Tetris does have a way of sucking the fun out of it. Have you guys dropped cash on games for your phone or simply resulted to alternate means of diversion? [Slate]
