OpenMoko Neo Freerunner Linux Smartphone Hands-on

The Gadget: OpenMoko's just-announced Neo Freerunner, which is the mass-market version of their previous Neo 1973 phone. The Impressions: It uses the exact same UI as the previous version, but is actually really preliminary and buggy in the version we played with (it was power cycling for a short while). They assured us that the phone is really early in the development cycle. The UI looks nice and has glossy icons and not too much text (read: not too Linuxy for people who are afraid of Linux), but it's nothing you've never seen before if you've seen the OpenMoko phones. The hardware is solid and feels about as wide as the iPhone, but a bit thicker (with rounded corners). It's too early to tell how well this will do in the mass market, especially compared with the Google Android platform, but Freerunner does show promise.

Cellphones Conquer Land Lines for First Time in 2007

According to a recent piece in the NYTimes, 2007 will be the first year in which the dollars spent on cellphone subscriptions trump traditional land lines. Among other points, they site that in 2006, households spend an average of $542 on residential lines while only spending $524 on wireless services. Add another year of cellphone growth to those figures, and it's hard to believe that land lines are still king. What about your household? In mine, we definitely spend more on our cells than our obligatory, barebones land line. Of course, if you factored in all of our wired services (including internet and television), the phones lose by a small margin. [nyt]

CellCoach Trains You To Not Use Cellphones In the Car

Aimed at parents of teenagers who just can't get their offspring to stop using a cellphone in the car, the CellCoach emits a high-pitched beep whenever it detects cellphone traffic. The result? A really annoying noise that reinforces the fact that they shouldn't text or call while driving. It installs "permanently" under the car's dashboard so your kid can't remove it, and should be a much cheaper alternative to actually talking to your kids and teaching them right from wrong. What? They're bastards. Oh and it would be an awesome prank to pull on a buddy. [NewsWireToday via Textually via Shiny Shiny]

Android Shown Up and Running on Japanese Phone Prototype

Japanese cellphone company Willcom has shown the new Android phone OS up and running on phone hardware (although a reference board and not an actual phone), demonstrating multitasking functionality such as answering a call while browsing Google Maps. Can you feel the excitement?! Android isn't going to be all that exciting until user-made apps come along to make the open-source OS live up to its pedigree, but until then it's still fun to follow it's march towards being loaded on a real phone you can actually use.
Parrot Mimics Ringtone to Torture His Owner

Parrot "Billy" is the newest contender for Official Gizmodo Mascot 2007, were such contests to exist (which though they may, we'd never award a bird the honor since birdfights aren't all that lucrative). Whenever his keeper leaves the room, the parrot mimics his cellphone ringer, sending the man into a mad dash for his phone...only to be laughed at by a bird. But the best part? The owner has changed his ringer five times, but the bird keeps learning the new tunes, including Nokia theme, Mambo Number 5, the BBC Match of the Day tune, Soul Limbo and No Woman No Cry. And it's funny because we're sitting over here, where one doesn't deal with the mad dashes across the house...or the guilt of eating chicken. [thesun via spluch]

CNBC: 3G iPhone Coming by June 2008 [3g

According to CNBC's Jim Goldman, Apple will be dropping a 3G iPhone on us by June of next year at the latest, probably in late May. It's not unreasonable, with a new model coming out about a year after the first. Combine 3G speeds with larger flash drives, and the iPhone will be a lot more appealing to a lot more people who have been holding out for just such upgrades. [Appleinsider]

T-Mobile Customer Service Killed By Flooding in the Northwest

Our busybody brother Consumerist is reporting that T-Mobile's customer service is totally down and out for the time being thanks to some wrath-of-god flooding in the Pacific Northwest. Their soggy computers can't pull up customer info, apparently. It's been down since last night, though no word on when it'll be back up. [Consumerist, Image via Seattle Times]

External Battery Wraps Around Your iPhone and Delivers Extra Juice [Cellphones]

The mStation mophie juice pack for the iPhone is an extended battery that fits around the outside of the device, adding some awkward bulk to it but also a generous extra 250 hours of standby time, 8 hours of talk time, 6 hours of Internet use, 7 hours of video playback, and 24 hours of audio playback. It rejoices using a standard iPhone plug, so you won't need to buy anything extra to use it. It seems handy enough for people who are always running out of batteries on the go. It'll be available in the middle of this month for $100. [Product Page]

TAG Heuer Set to Develop Luxury Cellphone Line: Does Tiger Woods Need More Money?

According to the folks at Electronista, fancy-pants watchmaker TAG Heuer will team up with the French designers at Modelabs to develop a new line of luxury cellphones. The news follows closely on the heels of other fashion icons like Armani and Prada entering the phone biz, but there is no word yet on how the Tag Heuer phone would compare to those offerings in terms of specifications. As for the design, the cellphones are expected to be as as "contemporary," "technological" and "timeless" as their watches. Naturally, there is no word yet on any type of advertising campaign, but my guess is that somehow Tiger Woods will find a way to make even more money whoring it out to the masses.
Save $20 on an iPhone Data Plan by Nuking It

The AT&T website is allowing iPhone customers to drop their $20 unlimited EDGE data plans.
Helio Cuts All Phone Prices by $50, Flashes Some Leg, Winks

First they dropped their all-in plan to $99 a month, and now they've gone and slashed the prices of all their phones by $50. Helio really wants you to switch to them in a bad way, which could be a sign that they aren't doing so hot, or they may be paving the way for a new device to drop. Either way, now that you can get an Ocean for less than $200 and get an all-in plan for less than $100, I certainly wouldn't blame you for taking the bait, as that is as good a deal as you're likely to get in the cellphone world right now.
NEC N905i Sports 5MP Face-Detecting Camera, Everything Else We Love in Japanese Phones

As enthralled as I'm not with the Japanese mobile market, I'm kinda geek-jonesin' for the smoking red and black flavor of the NEC 905i. The headline-grabber is its 5MP camera with face detection, which can lock onto three grills simultaneously for optimal vogueing'€"a feature usually reserved for bigger, badder shooters. The W-CDMA and GSM-packing clamshell is also loaded up with a crispy 3-inch, 480x854 resolution screen and H.264 video recording in VGA resolution, HSDPA, GPS, plus the usual support for a bunch of media formats, and a Yamaha sound engine for decent audio playback.
