AT&T's SIM-Only Option Loosens the Shackles [Cellular Networks]

AT&T has begun to offer a new SIM-only service via their online store. For $5 ($10, minus a $5 online discount), new customers are able purchase a SIM card on the AT&T network, without receiving a new handset. It appears you are then free to use the SIM card with unlocked handsets and AT&T locked cellphones. Unfortunately, the two year contract still stands, with the exception of the pre-paid options. It is a nice touch, for that we salute you, AT&T. However, it is possible to get a shitty new phone for free with a two year contract, and then prostitute your SIM card around as you please. So, you know, it is a positive symbolic move at best, but we're still wanting more freeness. [AT&T via BGR]

BlackBerry 9000 Specifications Change For the Better [Cellphones]

We previously brought you bad news concerning the specifications of the lust-worthy BlackBerry 9000 (a.k.a 9100.) Well, according to BGR, RIM has just changed the details of the device, which is now set to include UMTS and HSDPA. As if that was not good news enough, there is another interesting piece of new information. The OS is set for a complete upgrade to version 5.0. It is not clear when this will occur, but the chaps at BGR seem to think the 9000 will ship with the standard version 4.3.2, with the upgrade to follow by the end of the year. As to what new features will be implemented, that is anybody's guess, but it is promising news nonetheless. The hotly anticipated BlacBerry 9000 is likely to be launched at this year's Wireless Enterprise Symposium, and we just cannot wait. [BGR]

Where Your Cellphones Go When They Die [Reality]

As CES 2008 comes to an end and we wipe the gadget drool from our collective chins, the NYT published this interesting shot from Umicore's cellphone recycling plant in Hilliard, Ohio. And damn it's depressing to see that pile of electronic carcasses, our fetish of choice piled high in phallus-shriveling obsoleteness. The article also points out that cellphones are the most valuable form of "e-waste," containing about $1 of recyclable materials in each handset'€"the majority of which is gold. But when you think of that $1 versus what you actually paid for the phone...yeah, we're back at that depressing angle again. [nyt via textually]

Do you know anybody that doesn't have a portable music player, let alone several? It's 2008, and just about everyone we know has either an iPod, Zune, SanDisk or cellphone that can play back MP3s on the go. Here's our question to you: which PMPs do you own, and which one is your "main" player? If you have more than one type, vote for the one you use the most. Gawker Media polls require Javascript; if you're viewing this in an RSS reader, click through to view in your Javascript-enabled web browser.

China Presents the Goochi Guchy Gucci Cellphone

The Italian fashion house so beloved of fans of pubic topiary is no stranger to having its products knocked off by enterprising people wanting some of the Gucci dollar. Nevertheless, you can bet your life that its people will wince when they see just how a chinese cellphone company has interpreted the brand. The Gucciphone, complete with crystal and gold trim, is upholstered in that utterly naff double G-logo fabric. Full stats and a gallery are below. 2.1-inch, 16 million color QVGA screen FM radio 2 Megapixel camera Micro SD support Stereo speakers 110x50x17.6 mm Weighs 99g The bit that makes me laugh the most is that it comes with a certificate stating that the gold and crystals are real.
Windows Mobile 6.1 Video Walk-through

Following up on the Windows Mobile 6.1 details and pictures, Boy Genius has a video walk-through of the latest Microsoft Mobile OS. If you can hear the guy's voice over the music (we had a hard time), he says it's AT&T branded, so it'll definitely hit AT&T some time early next year. (You may want to mute the sound, since that's all he says.) The responsiveness seems to be about the same as current versions, but we'll have to wait until we get our hands on it to make sure. Sporting HSDPA connectivity, it lets you surf the web using the 2-inch screen horizontally and has custom web shortcut buttons. It also comes loaded with Google Maps for Mobile, although you'll be typing in your location manually as there's no GPS on board. It also has a 2-megapixel digital camera, a music player with FM radio, Bluetooth, and it comes with a 256MB Memory Stick Micro. It's set to drop in the first quarter of 2008 in "select markets," which probably means Europe, but we'll keep you updated.

Japanese Manga Phones Offer the Cheap Customization That I Want

These new Softbank phones headed to Japan are styled out with designs from the manga Gacchaman. In addition to the outer shells being painted, the icons and wallpapers also sport the theme. I don't understand why we don't have more painted phones here in the States. It seems like a pretty cheap way to make phones customizable and more unique, no? I'm just saying I'd love to rock a phone with My Little Pony all over it. That'd be the coolest! Check the interior themes on these phones after the jump. [TokyoMango]

How does a pre-paid service handle over-the-air music subscriptions? Answer: very cheaply. Virgin Mobile's Wild Card by Kyocera is the first phone that can receive music from its Headliners streaming audio player. The service is $2.50 per month, and you can listen to a given song on demand for 25 cents. (Electronista says that the quarter gets you unlimited listening of each song, though Virgin's press release didn't corroborate that.) The phone itself is pretty sweet too, with flip-open QWERTY keyboard, Bluetooth and 1.3-megapixel camera. [Virgin Mobile USA via Electronista]

Verizon just added the Samsung Gleam to its lineup, a shiny 3G clamshell with Bluetooth, a 2-megapixel camera, a microSD slot, and all the V Cast fixins you're used to. It also has touch buttons on the front for controlling the tunes you loaded up on that microSD card. One unique feature it has is Night Shot, allowing you to take pictures at night without a flash that'll look like Paris Hilton's sex tape. Is that reference too old? Meh, I'm leaving it in.
