AT&T's SIM-Only Option Loosens the Shackles [Cellular Networks]
AT&T has begun to offer a new SIM-only service via their online store. For $5 ($10, minus a $5 online discount), new customers are able purchase a SIM card on the AT&T network, without receiving a new handset. It appears you are then free to use the SIM card with unlocked handsets and AT&T locked cellphones. Unfortunately, the two year contract still stands, with the exception of the pre-paid options. It is a nice touch, for that we salute you, AT&T. However, it is possible to get a shitty new phone for free with a two year contract, and then prostitute your SIM card around as you please. So, you know, it is a positive symbolic move at best, but we're still wanting more freeness. [AT&T via BGR]

BlackBerry 9000 Specifications Change For the Better [Cellphones]
We previously brought you bad news concerning the specifications of the lust-worthy BlackBerry 9000 (a.k.a 9100.) Well, according to BGR, RIM has just changed the details of the device, which is now set to include UMTS and HSDPA. As if that was not good news enough, there is another interesting piece of new information. The OS is set for a complete upgrade to version 5.0. It is not clear when this will occur, but the chaps at BGR seem to think the 9000 will ship with the standard version 4.3.2, with the upgrade to follow by the end of the year. As to what new features will be implemented, that is anybody's guess, but it is promising news nonetheless. The hotly anticipated BlacBerry 9000 is likely to be launched at this year's Wireless Enterprise Symposium, and we just cannot wait. [BGR]

Where Your Cellphones Go When They Die [Reality]
As CES 2008 comes to an end and we wipe the gadget drool from our collective chins, the NYT published this interesting shot from Umicore's cellphone recycling plant in Hilliard, Ohio. And damn it's depressing to see that pile of electronic carcasses, our fetish of choice piled high in phallus-shriveling obsoleteness. The article also points out that cellphones are the most valuable form of "e-waste," containing about $1 of recyclable materials in each handset'"the majority of which is gold. But when you think of that $1 versus what you actually paid for the phone...yeah, we're back at that depressing angle again. [nyt via textually]

Nokia Eco Sensor Concept It's all Shiny Glass, Environment and Techno-Lust
Here is Nokia Research Center's new cellphone: the Eco Sensor, a shiny concept which includes the phone itself and a "wearable sensors" that "monitor your health, environment and local weather" to "increase your global environmental awareness" with technologies like Near Field Communication and Radio Frequency Identification. Well, whatever rocks your world, you treehugging hippies you. They mention motion detection, solar cells and heart-rate monitor, but all I can see is shiny, drooltastic and lickable. Windows Mobile 6.1 Video Walk-through
Following up on the Windows Mobile 6.1 details and pictures, Boy Genius has a video walk-through of the latest Microsoft Mobile OS. If you can hear the guy's voice over the music (we had a hard time), he says it's AT&T branded, so it'll definitely hit AT&T some time early next year. (You may want to mute the sound, since that's all he says.) The responsiveness seems to be about the same as current versions, but we'll have to wait until we get our hands on it to make sure.
