Skype and 3 to Team Up for Free Mobile Calls in the

logo_skype.jpgBritish cell phone users could be on their way to free calls from their mobiles, thanks to the rumored launch of a Skype/3 branded handset. According to The Times, the tarnished pin-up boys of the VoIP set and the 3G mobile phone operator have teamed up in the hope of taking a sizeable chunk out of the cell phone market in Britain. Although Skype is already offered up on the 3 network as an up-front subscription service, this is the first time that internet calls will be offered for free. The idea is that owners of the Skype/3 handset will be able to enjoy free calls to each other '€" making Skype sexy again, and providing a push to the 3 network, which still lags behind providers Vodaphone, Orange, O2 and T-Mobile. Will, however, the technology be good enough, and the handsets cheap enough to loosen the big four's grip on the competitive cell phone market in the UK? [Times Online]
