LG Chocolate VX8500 Phone Now Available from
Just as we predicted last week, here it is July 31st and LG's Chocolate VX8500 phone is now available on the Verizon website. The good news is that with a two-year contract Verizon is doling out a $50 online discount, bringing the price of admission down to $149.99, $50 less than we thought it might be. Buy it online now or wait until August 7 where it will be available in retail stores. Oh yeah, and if you're only willing to commit yourself for one year with Verizon, the coveted LG Chocolate phone will cost you $100 more, at $249.99. Either way, that's just one purdy phone, what with it being all black and chocolate-y and all. '" Charlie White LG Chocolate Product Page [Verizon]

Stolen mobiles 'will be blocked', Phone Hackers Left to Rot In
The BBC '" AKA the Benny Hill Network '" reports that by the year's end, in the UK: Around 80% of mobile phones will be blocked on all five UK networks within 48 hours of being reported stolen in future, industry leaders have pledged. That pledge is part of a charter to reduce phone crime launched by the Mobile Industry Crime Action Forum. Crappy sentence structure aside, this sounds good. But I'm also freaked out. What's next? Shutting down phones with pirated MP3s on them? The article also points out another law in the UK: "Those convicted under the Mobile Telephones (Re-programming) Act 2002 can face up to five years in prison." Limey phone Haxxors, you are about to be owned.'" Brian Lam BBC: Stolen Mobiles 'will be blocked' [ Via Textually ]

Nokia Creates Self-Destructing
Nokia has created a cellphone that disassembles itself in two seconds when heat is applied to it, making it easier to dispose of when it becomes obsolete two weeks from now. No, it's not going to be falling apart in your hot little pocket, but if laser heating is applied, the thing literally comes apart, making it easier to recycle instead of the shredding that goes on with current cellphones and small electronics. It's called "active disassembly." According to Nokia: "The idea is to disassemble a mobile phone by a heat-activated mechanism without any contact. By using a centralized heat source like laser heating, the shape memory alloy (SMA) actuator is activated, and the mobile phone covers are opened. The battery, display, printed wiring board (PWB) and mechanical parts are separated and can then be recycled in their material specific recycling processes. The required temperature for the disassembly is 60-150 C. If it were lower the phone could dismantle by itself, for instance in a hot car, and if it were higher the plastics would melt." Finally, someone is thinking about what will happen to all these shiny toys after the thrill is gone. '" Charlie White Gadgets That Self-Destruct: "Active Disassembly" [Tree Hugger]
